In Stride - CN Tower, Toronto, Canada

May 25, 2012. "In Stride - CN Tower." Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

A commuter walks across the Bathurst Street bridge in Toronto. The CN Tower featured in the shot is the "tallest freestanding structure in North America" and an architectural icon for the city of Toronto and one of the highlights of its ultra-modern skyline.

Sting Ray

Sting Ray

February 3, 2012. Sting Ray. A student in a Corvette t-shirt catches up on some quiet reading late one evening at a sidewalk table outside the Park Avenue Starbucks in Winter Park, Florida.

I typically avoid ISO 3200 on the Leica X1 due to how noisy it gets. This was shot on an exceptionally dark evening, so I decided to break with my normal pattern of shooting 1600 or slower.

Authorized Personnel

January 24, 2012. Authorized Personnel. A self-portrait.

In case you're wondering, the camera is in the helmet, on a 12-second timer. If you look closely, you can see it.

The two self-portrait shots this week are practice shots for a street photography contest next month featuring self-portraits as the theme.

Schilling

Schilling

April 23, 2005. Schilling.

I am in a nostalgic baseball mood after yesterday's post.

It was one of the first games of 2005. The previous season, Curt Schilling's famous intensity helped lead the Boston Red Sox to their first World Series since 1918.

Before starting his game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Schilling sat as if in a trance staring out over Tropicana Field.

The Rays went on to win the game, but this image that I took of Schilling remains one of my favorite baseball memories.

Lighthouse of Solitude

Lighthouse of Solitude

December 5, 2011. Lighthouse of Solitude. I find watching the people on most cruise ships far more interesting than watching the shows. Having just finished a book on Caribbean lighthouse restorations, I was struck by how much this spotlight's texture in the ship's theatre reminded me of the penetrating beam from a Fresnel lens. A beacon inside the ship's belly distracting its cargo instead of directing its crew, glowing off the shoulders of a thousand people together yet strangely alone got me thinking about the isolating power of technology for the rest of the evening.

I still don't know what the show was about.
